DANTE'S "INFERNO" CREATED BY A SINGLE LETTER

Editorial and typographic work in which Dante's "Inferno" received a new book cover. The cover was created using the letter "i" as it resembles roman pillars, as well as a gate. The colors and layers were created to evoke the feeling of traveling downwards, similar to how Dante went deeper into the Underworld.
However, like most dramatic literature, there is a sign of hope. In this case, the center of the letter.

OBJECTIVE

To create a book cover with the design based on a singular alphabetical letter.

I chose Dante Alighieri's "Inferno" from 'The Divine Comedy."

THE LETTER

I started this process by choosing a single letter to focus on.

As "i" is the first letter of the title and resembles pillars, this seemed a natural choice.

COLOR CHOICES

I knew I wanted red as a main color as a representation of Hell and its fire.

CONSTRUCTION

I manipulated the letter shape to enhance the appearance of Roman pillars before multiplying it using various stroke widths to evoke the feeling of falling.

LAYERS OF FIRE

I wanted to create the sense of falling down, much like how Dante traveled down when visiting the Underworld. The red and orange symbolised fire.

However, like all good stories, there was a slither of hope. In this case, the central line.
